A decade ago i had a letter published in New Welsh Review suggesting that its art expert should have included Deacon and Flanagan in an article on distinguished Welsh artists of the 20th century. I wasn’t chuffed when a journalist in The Western Mail wrote an article criticising me as an example of someone pushing Welshness when unwa(rra)nted- both sculptors he considered international artists merely born in Wales. At the 2007 Venice Biennale, Deacon represented…Wales. And i see Wikipedia is not alone in listing Flanagan as Welsh. Anyway, i think it’s important to counteract a certain attitude, as with the English art historian who said in the 1950s that there was no such thing as Welsh art. Wales now has an unusually high percentage of artists and the future looks bright.

Wales has long been an inspiration for Art and Artists. The scenery drew in many people from abroad to paint the region including JMW Turner and LS Lowry. We have 750 miles of coastline, more than 400 castles, 5 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 3 national parks including the only coastal one in the UK - you can see why artists are drawn here.  Here are some examples of collections of works by Welsh artists and details of how to visit them.
